Name Change

Changing Times

When founded in 1954, the congregation had the name of Church of Unitarian Fellowship of Saint Catharines.

The founders chose this name because:
  • in the 50's, religious organizations were churches

  • the focus of the church was the fellowship of its members

  • the church was to address the needs of the growing city of Saint Catharines and its hinterland

Since then there have been the following changes:

  • members came from other churches who were gun-shy of the term church

  • the congregation served the larger area of Niagara from Grimsby to Niagara Falls, from Port Colborne to Niagara-on-the-Lake

After much debate and changes in membership the new name, Unitarian Congregation of Niagara, was adopted.
