WHAT SHALL WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN

Composer's Introduction

We need to inculcate respect and love for others and all creation. Interestingly enough, the text was based very roughly on a central Jewish prayer, the Sh'm :

And you shall love Adonai your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your power.

Take these words which I command you this day to heart.

Teach them carefully to your children and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you go on your way, when you lie down and when you rise up .

My version turns this around a bit, it asks 'What shall we teach? - and replies 'Teach them to love all God's creatures, all those that dwell on earth'.
