Brief History of Congregation

Milestones

  • Travel to Unitarian Church of Niagara Falls, New York(1953)
  • Founding of church in St.Catharines with 21 charter members (1954)
  • Moving to 223-225 Church Street (1964)
  • Visit of the Rev. Phillip Hewett (1973)
  • Hosting the CUC Annual General Meeting (1978)
  • Hiring part-time Minister, The Rev.Martha Munson (1987-1990)
  • Issuing of first program "Sampler" by Program Chairman Ed Lemon (1992)
  • Holding first Summer Services (1996)
  • Resignation of 12 members to form new group (1997)
  • Renovating 223 Church Street building and installing ramp (2000)
  • Demolishing buildings at 225 Church and replacing them with a garden (2000)
  • Renovating 223 Church and ensuring that the building is completely wheel-chair accessible (2003)
  • Changing name to Unitarian Congregation of Niagara (2003)
  • Many same-sex marriages performed by Lay-Chaplains John Mayer and Doreen Peever (2003-2004)
